Our BonHanZA team member Thorben Pape has just received the doctoral award for medicine from the Paul Ehrlich society at their annual meeting in Weimar, Germany. He was awarded this price in recognition for his translational-experimental research on possible treatments for the capillary leakage in systemic inflammation.

In his doctoral thesis, Thorben screened already FDA-approved drugs on off-target effects on Angiopoietin-2 (Angpt-2), which is a mechanistic driver of endothelial hyperpermeability. He was able to identify the relatively old antifungal Bifonazole, which reduced the release and biosynthesis of Angpt-2 thereby improving capillary leakage in vitro. Further translational studies are already planned. For this work, Thorben has also received the doctoral award of his university earlier this year.

Congratulations Thorben!
