Who are we?

We are an interdisciplinary group of intensivists with a wide background of anesthesiology pulmonary medicine, nephrology as well as gastroenterology focusing on studying ARDS and septic shock in a translational approach.

To answer clinical as well as scientific and translational questions as precisely as possible, we have established a cooperation of three large university associated intensive care departments in Germany and Switzerland, namely Bonn-Hannover-Zurich.

Prof. Dr. Sascha David

University Hospital Zurich

Sascha is an internist, nephrologist and intensivist who was clinically trained at Hannover Medical School. He did his postdoctoral research fellowship from 2009-2011 in Boston, USA at Harvard Medical School in Samir Parikh Lab. Currently, Sascha is the head of Medical Intensive care medicine at the University Hospital of Zurich.

His major research interests lie in the molecular mechanisms of capillary leakage and plasma exchange in the ICU setting.

Prof. Dr. Christian Bode

University Hospital Bonn

Christian is an anesthesiologist and intensivist who was clinically trained at the University Hospital Bonn. From 2010-2013, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the National Institutes of Health/NIH, USA in Dennis Klinmans laboratory of experimental immunology. Currently, Christian is managing senior physician of the section Intensive Care Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology at the University Hospital Bonn.

His scientific focus is to understand the inflammatory organ dysfunction in ARDS and sepsis to improve prevention and treatment strategies.

PD Dr. Klaus Stahl

Hannover Medical School

Klaus is a nephrologist, gastroenterologist and intensivist at Hannover Medical School Germany. He is interested in clinical and translational research in ARDS and septic shock.

A special focus of his research lies on extracorporeal treatment modalities such as therapeutic plasma exchange in septic shock and ECMO in ARDS.

Pedro D. Wendel-Garcia

University Hospital Zurich

Pedro pursued a Bachelor and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the ETH Zurich. Thereafter he studied Medicine as well as Biostatistics at the University of Zurich. He currently is a research associate at the Institute of Intensive Care Medicine at the University Hospital Zurich.

Following his mechanical engineering studies, he focused his research primarily on novel materials and micro- and nanorobots for biomedical applications. Now, his main research interests lie in mechanical ventilation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in ARDS, as well as blood purification therapies and novel biomarkers in sepsis and septic shock.
