Our BonHanZA team member Rolf Erlebach was honored with the clinical research award at the recent annual congress of the “Deutsche Interdisziplinäre Vereinigung für Intensiv- und Notfallmedizin”.

Rolf and Una Pale from the University of Zurich assessed the clinical use of the SpO2/FiO2-ratio for diagnosis and monitoring of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in three large intensive care datasets. The SpO2/FiO2 ratio was recently implemented as an additional hypoxemia criterion in a newly proposed definition of ARDS because of its simplicity and continuous non-invasive measurement. In their work, they could demonstrate several limitations of the SpO2/FiO2 ratio, that are of importance for clinicians at bedside to monitor disease progression and for conduction of clinical trials in ARDS.
